Respect for the Second Amendment
We support strong and effective enforcement of existing gun laws designed to keep firearms out of the hands of illegal possessors and users.
Places like Chicago claim to have the toughest gun laws in the country, but the city is besieged by gangs and violent criminals who indiscriminately gun down rivals and innocents alike. Over 700 murders and 4300 shootings in 2016 alone should be enough evidence that enforcement in that city is broken when left to feckless local judges who far too often turn violent felons back on the streets.
Gun laws are only tough if they are vigorously enforced by police and through a judicial system that keeps violators from the opportunity to possess another weapon and create another victim.
LEAN opposes legislation and legislating from the bench judicial decisions that would limit the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans to bear arms.
We believe the 2nd Amendment's direction, "...the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed..." means just what it says and that the safety of the American people, and the efforts of law enforcement to protect them, is enhanced when law-abiding and responsible citizens maintain the constitutional right to protect themselves.
We support the U.S. Supreme Court's 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570, which reaffirmed the 2nd Amendment's protection of an individual's right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use firearms for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.
Complaints, false claims, and lawsuits from the political left to limit lawful possession of certain firearms or magazine capacity will do little to solve a problem created by violent, vengeful criminals roaming the streets with little care for the law and little regard for future crime victims.
